Origin
Cormo Sheep were developed in 1961 by I.K. Downie in Tasmania. A cross between Corriedale (which is itself a cross between Merino and Lincoln) and Merino, the breed was developed to produce a fertile sheep with higher wool yield and a larger frame. The resulting breed is 1/4 Lincoln, 1/4 Australian Merino, and 1/2 Superfine Saxon Merino.
Characteristics
- Bright white wool (100% Cormo sheep are always white), a staple length of 3-5" and consistancy throughout. Cormo is next to skin soft (micron 17-23) and is a favorite among many handspinners.
- Easy management, no stalling or artifical feed required.
- Ewes weigh 120-160 lbs; Rams weigh 160-200 lbs.
